Think Croydon and a few things come to mind; Kate Moss, punk band The Damned, Crystal Palace football club, Peep Show and of course Dubstep, the now world conquering music genre that will forever be linked to the south London suburb. What you never hear though, is any mention of Tech House, another world conquering music genre. And to be honest we’re a little bit peeved about that. Because if Tech House has a spiritual home it’s Croydon, and that is due mainly to Swag Records and the people that gravitated towards the humble West Croydon record shop and studio.
Swag began in late 1992 and within a year it has positioned itself as the leading store to buy the strange new, stripped down, trippy, driving brand of house music being played at underground parties in and around south east London. On any given day you could walk in and find Terry Francis, Dave Mothersole, Grant Dell or Richard Grey serving behind the counter, Eddie Richards, Colin Dale or Mr C buying records and Matthew B, Gideon Jackson or Affie Yusuf at the helm in the studio upstairs. The building shook night and day with the throbbing, bass heavy grooves and the beat never stopped – or so it seemed. And now all these years later some of those records made in that little room at the top of the old Victorian building that housed the Swag headquarters are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve. Back when those tunes were cut, in the late 90’s and early 00’, pretty much the sole intention was to have something new and exciting to play at parties like Wiggle, Heart & Soul, Whoop Whoop and Kerfuffle

One EP is the first release of newborn E2-E8 Records out of London. A label to celebrate friendship and put new talents on the map.Out of Luca’s E2-E8 show on Netil Radio came the idea to launch an independent imprint with the same concept: putting good new electronic music into people’s ears, and expose people whose creative voice has hardly been heard so far. The result is a label with a clear plan, with promising talents already lined up to appear on the platform.Fittingly, the first release is a split EP between two friends. On the A side we have “Rising Sun”, from the mind of Netil Radio founder Miro Sundaymusiq. This suspended, emotive number perfectly encompasses Miro’s world, where ambient rooms and rapturous deep trance seamlessly bond together. The Pacifist Techno Version is purely for the mind, while the Non Pacifist Trance Version engages your body and translates the same emotions to the dance floor. The B side is home to two Meditations from the creative flare of Avsluta, one of the most fascinating sound artists recently appearing on London’s scene. With performances at Cafe Oto and collaborations with David Toop already on her back, we are witnessing her charting a groundbreaking path. “Meditation 03” and “Meditation 18” are part of that path – two rich and articulate works that will sit easily in many ambient sets. The Digital Bonus “Meditation 16” sees the artist playing with her voice, in a way that reminds us of Donato Dozzy and Anna Caragnano’s “Sintetizzatrice” from a few years back.Early support for this record comes from Vladimir Ivkovic, who played Meditation 18 as the opening track of one of his Noods Radio shows, and from Jane Fitz who played Rising Sun on her Rinse FM show.
Cool and Frank debuts on Cabaret Recordings for 30th release.
In a secret laboratory in an unknown location, two lifeforms not of this world were at work.Based on previous experiments, it was understood that when the two life forms were left alone together, they could create various elements from nothing, somehow communicating with each other what was needed through a sophisticated type of Internal Transmission. As scientists watched and took notes, the lifeforms sat on the floor across from each other. They did not talk. They did not move. They simply sat, doing the impossible. The atmosphere began to transform and one lifeform produced Gold, Arsenic, Carbon, and Radium. Almost simultaneously, the other conjured up Oxygen, Mercury, Nitrogen, and Neon. The elements swirled in the air until they finally combined. The result was astonishing. It was the exact same compound the lifeforms had been discovered with when they crash landed on Earth some 22 months before. A compound never seen before.
